Your Neighborhood at a Glance: The Battle of the Boroughs

New York City is the birthplace to more homegrown musical talent than anywhere else in the world. From Broadway musical theater and Tin Pan Alley songwriting of the early 1900s, to the roots of folk music that took hold in the Village in the 60s, to the wild disco scene of the 70s, to the hip hop movement in Brooklyn and the Bronx of the 80s and early 90s, to the modern Manhattan and Brooklyn Indie pop/rock scene of today, NYC is firmly entrenched in every genre, and every borough contributes.

The boundless and diverse music scene that has grown in the city is still very alive today. Up-and-coming acts are constantly touring the many venues scattered throughout the five boroughs. We know how competitive our city is, so which borough can currently claim that it is the home to the best musical talent in NYC? Well, a competition seeks to answer that question, the Battle of the Boroughs, hosted by WNYC.

The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, at 44 Charlton Street in SoHo, is hosting a series of shows that will first crown the winner of each individual borough. The Brooklyn contest will be held on Friday, February 3rd, Queens battles on March 2nd, The Bronx contest is on April 6th, Staten Island competes on May 4th, and then Manhattan bands will square off on June 1st. Then, after the winner of each borough is decided, an epic final battle will be held between the five music acts on June 29th to determine which band and borough is the very best. The champion of the contest will earn a coveted slot to play Central Park Summerstage.  Ticket prices vary for each contest, from $15-$30, but admission includes a free drink and snacks.
