ATTENTION ART LOVERS: SPEND HOLIDAY AT WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK

by Jennifer Roberts, Halstead Property Agent & Neighborhood Expert

In town this Memorial Day weekend and looking for something to do? Head down to Washington Square Park for the  Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit.
There is much history behind the show. “It all began … one balmy spring day in 1931, in the heart of the depression Era. Jackson Pollock, desperately in need of funds to pay the rent on his Greenwich Village studio that also served as his home, took a few of his iconoclastic paintings down several flights of stairs and set them up on the sidewalk near Washington Square Park. His friend and fellow Village artist, Willem DeKooning, in equally desperate financial straits, soon joined him”
“It is not known how many works of art, whose values would soon skyrocket, they sold that day. However, their enterprise was noted by some public-spirited citizens, including such luminaries of the art world as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum of Art,  and Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Director of the Museum of Modern Art. “
“They organized the art show that would evolve into the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, a twice-a-year happening, every Memorial Day Weekend and the weekend that follows, and every Labor Day Weekend and the weekend that follows.”
“Among the milestones that mark its nearly 80 years are the concept of the artists being selected as exhibitors by a jury of fellow artists, based on slides of their work being submitted; the abolishing of an early ban on nudes; the opening of the show to photography as an art form; and the recognition of crafts, provided each piece is one-of-a-kind and hand-made.”
The event now showcases fine artists and craft artisans from around the New York metropolitan area, the nation and the world. Attendees come from all over and are a cosmopolitan mix, including art lovers, tourists, faculty and students from the area’s many schools and professionals such as interior designers. The show has its venue on University Place, and this spring will start at East 12th Street extending south along the east side of Washington Square Park ending at West 3rd Street. The southern end of the show encompasses Schwartz Plaza (aka Bobkin Lane), between NYU’s Shimkin Hall and Bobst Library.

May is Bike Month

Biking has taken New York City by storm. Since 2000, the number of cyclists in the five boroughs has more than doubled. Since 2006, the City has installed more than 250 miles of bike lanes, bringing the grand total to approximately 700 miles. There’s a Google Map API called Ride the City that allows bicycle route planning throughout the five boroughs. There are devoted blogs and websites like Bike NYC and Bike Blog NYC and there are tons of bicycle clubs, including the Five Borough Bike Club and the New York Cycle Club. This summer, NYC will be introducing a Bike Share program offering 10,000 bikes available to borrow 24/7 at 600 stations.

May is the perfect time to get in gear and celebrate this trend. Enjoy the benefits of cycling all month long - the exercise, the speed and ease of travel (better than being packed into subway cars or busses right?), and the overall freedom that allows you to view and appreciate this beautiful city from a new perspective.

So, get your Lance Armstrong on with these special events throughout the month:

May 18th is National Bike to Work Day. Whether you’re an seasoned expert or a novice, this is prime opportunity to pedal your way to the office. Several stops in the city will be offering free refreshments, giveaways, and the strength of the cycling community.

May 18th-19th is the NYC Bike Expo at Penn Plaza Pavilion which is an event that celebrates all things cycling. It’s free and there is complimentary on-site bike parking, of course.

May 19th is Bike Bonanza, which takes place at Father Capodanno Boulevard and Hunter Avenue in Staten Island. Kids get free helmets and lessons on bike safety.

May 20th is Gran Fondo New York, an Italian-style cycling event that begins at the George Washington Bridge. The event features a 100-mile race (Gran Fondo) and a relaxing 65-mile ride (Medio Fondo).

May 23rd is Bike Commuting 101 at Eastern Mountain Sports store at 2152 Broadway. Learn the rules and regulations of cycling in New York, with a focus on getting to work in the morning safely and comfortably on your bicycle.

Experience NY Burger Week

The burger isn’t just a backyard food anymore, or for New Yorkers, a balcony or rooftop grilling food. The burger has become a culinary delight, as high-end restaurants and gastropubs across the city are putting unique spins on the American classic. Burger patties are made with expensive meats (Kobe or Wagyu beef anyone?), done in ethnic styles, or marinated in foreign sauces. They are topped with imported cheeses, uncommon vegetables, hand-cut applewood smoked bacon, special fried goodies, and flavorful sauces. They are placed between artisan breads and served with specific alcohol pairings. To celebrate this burger revolution, NYC is having it’s first ever Burger Week from May 13th through the 20th.

Burger Conquest has teamed up with Thrillist to create NY Burger Week, seven days of awesome burger and craft beer events. Tickets to the special events are available through the Thrillist website. To assist you in achieving burger nirvana, we at the Halstead blog have hand-picked some of our favorite events that are sure to get your mouth watering:

Stand 4, located in Greenwich Village at 24 East 12th Street, is running a special all week of $30 for three off-menu sliders with sides of tempura’d bread & butter pickles and a choice of either tater tots, onion rings, or fries three ways (chili, sweet potato, or jalepeno/pepper jack hot). You also get two eight-ounce craft beers or one “stiff” milkshake like Kahlua vanilla or Captain Morgan pumpkin.

Beekman Beer Garden Beach Club, located at the South Street Seaport in FiDi, is throwing a burger bash on Friday, May 18th. For $20 you get a massive house-ground burger and two craft beers to enjoy on the beach. You also get exclusive access to a dance party on the sand-covered area, complete with two DJs and a live band.

The East Village Burger Crawl is a very special event being held on Saturday, May 19th. The crawl covers 10 different East Village hot spots, including Bareburger, Village Pourhouse, SideBar, Little Town and 13th Step among others. Tickets are available to purchase in three levels, for $30 you get five craft beers and five gourmet sliders at any of the establishments, for $40 you get 10 craft beers and 10 delicious sliders, and for $20 you get 10 gourmet mini-burgers. With slider choices like bacon-beef, angus with cognac sauce, and lamb and arugula, this is burger euphoria.

HOW MUCH WOULD THE WHITE HOUSE BE APPRAISED FOR IF IT WERE IN NYC?

The mathematicians at Movoto attempted to come up with the answers to this dream listing most any realtor would love to be involved in.

Here is how they calculated the numbers on the above infographic:

They took the median price per square foot of residences in each metro area then compared these figures to the real estate market stats gathered by the professionals at The Koitz Group.

When all is said and done, the White House would go on the market for an astounding $389,000,000 if it was situated in Manhattan, more than any other city!  Below is the listing prices in other large US Markets.  Isn’t it fun to play Fantasy Real Estate every now an again.

Experience the Hester Street Fair

by Jennifer Roberts, Halstead Property Agent & Neighborhood Expert

It’s Spring at least that is what the calendar says! What better way to spend a beautiful spring day then outside at the Hester Street Fair on the Lower East Side.

At the turn of the century, Hester Street was the site of the busiest outdoor market in New York City: “There is hardly a square foot of ground in Hester Street that is not covered with people during the day. The whole place seems to be in a state of perpetual motion, and the occasional visitor is apt to have a feeling of giddiness.” NY Times, July 27, 1895.

Today the market, located at Hester and Essex Streets and adjacent to Seward Park,  has a focus on curated local goods and food. This tree-lined street packs in shoppers every Saturday from 10am to 6pm through October 27th. The fair offers “a killer combination of stylish vintage wares-retro jewelry, antique decor and old-fashioned hats-and one of the best collections of food vendors in Manhattan.”

Haven’t found the perfect gift for Mother’s Day yet? This Saturday, Hester will be hosting its very own Vintage Coterie Market! With 17+ vendors dedicated to unique vintage finds, this event will highlight some of their best vintage vendors with everything from jewelry, apparel, accessories, gifts, and bric-a-brac.  If you haven’t found something for mom yet, you are sure to find something here!

When you are done shopping you can grab lunch at The Bombay Sandwich Company or Luke’s Lobster and then grab some dessert at Filled With Sweets.

For a full list of vendors and more information, go to http://www.hesterstreetfair.com/

Move over Hollywood, NYC is the New Tinseltown

The Big Apple is no stranger to showbiz, we are the home of Broadway after all, and many world famous movie scenes contain undeniable NYC settings. Breakfast at Tiffany’s,  King Kong, and West Side Story are just a few iconic movies depicting a New York City back drop. Moreover, anyone with hopes and aspirations to “make it big”  in the entertainment industry knows a move to the two epicenters of either Hollywood or New York City are a must if they want to fulfill their dreams and become a household name.  In addition to those who envision their faces gracing both the big and small screens, what goes on  behind the scenes is more than half the battle for creating great and iconic entertainment. Combine the talent with the ideal setting, and you have the unparalleled talent pool that is New York City.  Just how intertwined is the television/film industry with NYC? Numbers released by Boston Consulting Group and Mayor Bloomberg’s office yesterday from a new economic impact study reveal that the film and television industry has spent $60 billion on production in New York City over the past decade, the strongest it’s been to date.

The labor and resources it takes to create a TV show or a movie can also be credited with adding 30,000 jobs to the city’s film industry sector since 2004. Last year alone, film and television generated an astounding and record breaking $7.1 billion. Hair and make-up artists, wardrobe stylists, construction crews, catering and hospitality groups, and post-production digital and technical talent are only some of the areas New Yorker’s are called on to lend their expertise to the many projects being shot in the city.  According to the study, at least 13 pilots were shot here this spring, and 188 films were shot here last year. A member of the Mayor’s administration said “The BCG study confirms that the Bloomberg administration has successfully reestablished New York City as the creative hub of the film, television and digital media industries.”
