Experience the Brooklyn Film Festival

The annual Brooklyn Film Festival begins on Friday, June 1st and will run through June 10th. This year’s event features a huge variety of films, with nearly 100 premiers from 30 different countries, along with many exciting special events. Screenings will take place at the Brooklyn Heights Cinema and Williamsburg’s indieScreen. The New York Daily News offers tips on how to navigate the festival’s large selection of films.

The Brooklyn Film Festival is an international competitive festival with a goal to provide a public forum in order to advance public interest in films and the independent production of films. The event also draws worldwide attention to Brooklyn as a center for cinema, encourages the rights of all Brooklyn residents to access and experience the power of independent filmmaking, and promotes artistic excellence and the creative freedom of artists. View the trailer for the 2012 event here

Tickets are available online where you can purchase opening night passes, which are good for two opening night screenings and an after party, or festival passes, which admit you to all film programs, parties, and festival events, or single program tickets to specific films.

Try The Epic DUMBO Stoop Sale

The Dumbo Improvement District has organized the fourth annual Epic Dumbo Stoop Sale set to be held under The Archway in Dumbo, Brooklyn on Saturday, June 2nd from 11am through 5pm. The event is done in partnership with KRRB and is free and open to the public.

At this annual community event locals have the opportunity to showcase and sell their handcrafted and second-hand goods. Billed as a garage sale, block sale, flea market, and local classifieds all wrapped up into one, creating a safe place to mingle with neighbors and buy, sell and trade anything you could imagine. You might happen to come across something rare, valuable, or useful, or you might find an item that suits you perfectly. The event has been very successful in the past due to its community atmosphere and one-of-a-kind experience.

Also happening in DUMBO on June 2nd, Browse and Pick, a two-part ticketed event where participants drop off items for the swap and return later to use points to acquire different items from the event. And from 10am until 10pm, the World Science Festival takes over Pier 1 and Main Street sections of Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The weather forecast for Saturday in Brooklyn looks good, so it should be an epic day in Dumbo!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROOKLYN BRIDGE!

What do you get for someone turning 129 today?  New York’s emblematic Brooklyn Bridge, a milestone of 19th century engineering that took 14 years to construct, celebrates its 129th anniversary today.

On May 24, 1883, the Bridge opened, linking both Brooklyn & Manhattan.  The celebration of the opening was so grand that it was attended by President Chester A. Arthur and Gov. Grover Cleveland of New York.

The May 25 New York Times on the next day reported the following, “The pleasant weather brought visitors by the thousands from all around. … It is estimated that over 50,000 people came in by the railroads alone, and swarms by the sound boats and by the ferry-boats helped to swell the crowds in both cities. … The opening of the bridge was decidedly Brooklyn’s celebration. New York’s participation in it was meager, save as to the crowd which thronged her streets.”

In celebration of the birthday, please enjoy the video slideshow above.  Happy Birthday Icon!

Experience New York Fleet Week 2012

With the ushering in of Summer and Memorial Day weekend comes another longstanding New York City tradition, Fleet Week. Every year since 1984 Manhattan hosts the men & women of the Coast Guard, the Navy and the Marine Corp who serve our country via the sea.  It’s a week long celebration to honor their dedication and services, while admiring the stately ships in our country’s fleet. This years’ Fleet Week notably commemorates the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner. Arriving tomorrow and departing the city on May 30th, the ships will be docked at Piers 90 & 92 on West 51st Street on 12th Ave. Both the tall and war ships will be open to the public daily from 8 am to 5 pm, and you can catch the ships approaching the Statue of Liberty starting tomorrow morning, Wednesday May 23rd at around 9:15.

One of the ships you’ll sea docked along the West Side is the ARC Gloria coming in at a stately 250 feet long. She’s a Colombian beauty and has traveled more than 500,000 nautical miles since being built.  The craftsmanship and artwork that goes into constructing something so grand as this is to be admired, and is one of the many things we’re grateful to look at up close when these ships come to town.

Aside from visiting the ships, interacting with the hundreds of visiting military members is a great way to experience Fleet Week. Military Day in Times Square is Saturday May 26th from 9am-6pm and will include a performance by a Marine Corp Band and a Navy Jazz Ensemble.  Many restaurants and bars will also be joining in the nautical theme week offering specials and deals for foodies, tourists and military members alike.

Visit the official Fleet Week New York website for a full list of events, and for more details on visiting the ships.

May is Bike Month

Biking has taken New York City by storm. Since 2000, the number of cyclists in the five boroughs has more than doubled. Since 2006, the City has installed more than 250 miles of bike lanes, bringing the grand total to approximately 700 miles. There’s a Google Map API called Ride the City that allows bicycle route planning throughout the five boroughs. There are devoted blogs and websites like Bike NYC and Bike Blog NYC and there are tons of bicycle clubs, including the Five Borough Bike Club and the New York Cycle Club. This summer, NYC will be introducing a Bike Share program offering 10,000 bikes available to borrow 24/7 at 600 stations.

May is the perfect time to get in gear and celebrate this trend. Enjoy the benefits of cycling all month long - the exercise, the speed and ease of travel (better than being packed into subway cars or busses right?), and the overall freedom that allows you to view and appreciate this beautiful city from a new perspective.

So, get your Lance Armstrong on with these special events throughout the month:

May 18th is National Bike to Work Day. Whether you’re an seasoned expert or a novice, this is prime opportunity to pedal your way to the office. Several stops in the city will be offering free refreshments, giveaways, and the strength of the cycling community.

May 18th-19th is the NYC Bike Expo at Penn Plaza Pavilion which is an event that celebrates all things cycling. It’s free and there is complimentary on-site bike parking, of course.

May 19th is Bike Bonanza, which takes place at Father Capodanno Boulevard and Hunter Avenue in Staten Island. Kids get free helmets and lessons on bike safety.

May 20th is Gran Fondo New York, an Italian-style cycling event that begins at the George Washington Bridge. The event features a 100-mile race (Gran Fondo) and a relaxing 65-mile ride (Medio Fondo).

May 23rd is Bike Commuting 101 at Eastern Mountain Sports store at 2152 Broadway. Learn the rules and regulations of cycling in New York, with a focus on getting to work in the morning safely and comfortably on your bicycle.

SUPER RINGS

The Super Bowl Champions, The New York Giants, received their rings last night in a private ceremony held at Tiffany’s.  The ring is a 14K white gold 30MM ring with surrounding diamonds, sapphire band and 4 diamond footballs representing their four Super Bowl victories as a franchise.  The total weight is 1.36 in diamonds and 1.11 in sapphires.  All we can say is WOW!

If you want your own Virtual Super Bowl Ring then download the Goldrun app from the iPhone App Store, Google Play, or the Droid Market where you can take a photo of you with the ring or with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
